In this paper, the author notes that the mapping model, based on the deterministic functioning of traditional acoustic instruments, is limited in describing the most innovative and potentially beneficial approaches in electronic instrument design. In addressing this issue, he evaluates the function and benefits of various types of electronic instruments in relation to the structural principles on which they are designed.
